A Peruvian court on Monday placed a Ukrainian national in nine months of preventive detention after he admitted murdering and dismembering a Russian woman after consuming ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic plant from the Amazon.
The murder of Liudmila Lazarenko, 44, by Ivan Kuzmin, 38, caused shock in Peru and attracted media attention.
“I declare the prosecutor’s request for nine months of preventive detention of Ivan Kuzmin for homicide to be severe,” said the judge at the San Martin court in the country’s northeast.
The crime took place Thursday in the Amazon city of Yurimaguas.
According to the description of the site, these foreigners, who maintained bonds of friendship, lived in “Dos Mundos,” a center for rituals of healing of body and soul.
During the hearing, Kuzmin admitted that he attacked his friend while under the influence of ayahuasca and mushrooms. The killer claimed that his actions were to “save” the soul of his friend, who was allegedly possessed by evil forces.
“He knew there were criminal sanctions for his actions,” said the public defender assigned to him.
Witnesses told prosecutors that the attacker was found in the Russian citizen’s room when he was arrested, completely out of his mind, with a knife in his hand and his body chopped up.
“They apparently had an argument and as a result the man attacked the victim (…),” Alto Amazonas provincial prosecutor Leisenia del Mar told the media on Latin TV channel.
The director of the treatment center, Pepe Ordoñez, who closed the center while the case was clarified, assured the media that the couple were just passing through and denied providing them with hallucinogens.
Lazarenko, who lives in Thailand with her husband and two daughters, was on vacation in Peru, as was her attacker.
