Seven days after the invasion began, Russia is still struggling to repel it, with President Vladimir Zelensky releasing a video clip of his armed forces chief, Alexander Sersky, reporting on the fighting.

– We continue to conduct offensive operations in the Kursk region. We currently control about 1,000 square kilometers of the territory of the Russian Federation, he said.

Zelensky said a meeting of senior officials ordered a “humanitarian plan” to be drawn up for the region.

Alexey Smirnov, acting governor of Russia’s Kursk region, said Ukraine controlled 28 settlements and the intrusion was about 12 kilometers deep and 40 kilometers wide.

The Ukrainian leader said in a statement that the Defense Ministry and diplomats had been ordered to submit a list of “necessary actions” to obtain permission from Kiev’s Western allies to attack Russia using long-range weapons.

According to a Ukrainian statement, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov called on Paris to lift the ban on Western weapons attacks on Russian military targets during talks with French Defense Minister Sebastien Le Cornu on the same day.
