British International Development Secretary Anneliese Dodds said the money would provide life-saving assistance to up to 150,000 Sudanese refugees fleeing escalating violence in Darfur.
It is estimated that more than 2 million people have fled Sudan since the violence that broke out after the coup in Sudan last April, with more than 1,200 entering Libya every day.
This is part of the government’s commitment to work with international partners to address the humanitarian crises that are causing people to flee their homes and to strengthen support for refugees in their home countries.
The £2 million aid will go towards humanitarian assistance in the hard-to-reach region of Kufra, where the UN estimates that up to 45,000 refugees are currently in urgent need of support.
The statement further stated: “Along with international partners, this funding will help provide much-needed emergency health, water, sanitation, hygiene and child protection services to the approximately 150,000 individuals seeking refuge in eastern Libya, as well as to the communities hosting them.”

Health services in Kufra are very limited and were already struggling before the humanitarian crisis. The system is now on the verge of collapse under the pressure of thousands of refugees requiring medical assistance.
Together with international partners, this funding will help provide much-needed emergency health, water, sanitation, hygiene and child protection services to some 150,000 individuals and their host communities taking refuge in eastern Libya.
Dodds said the UK was committed to providing life-saving assistance to the world’s most vulnerable people, including children, fleeing war in Sudan.
“Together with our international partners, we are providing much-needed water and emergency health, sanitation and hygiene services to displaced refugees in Libya,” he stressed.
