Ugandan Perus Chemutai is the defending Olympic champion in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase and is aiming for a second gold medal in the event at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

The star athlete, who won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, told Xinhua that she is very determined to shine in Paris despite having a tough time last year.

Uganda will send 25 athletes to participate.

Chemutai is well aware of the challenges of reaching the podium and said she is happy to have qualified for the Olympics, something not everyone can do.

“It is an honour to qualify for the Olympics and be part of the Ugandan team. As an athlete, I know it will not be easy to win gold in Paris because everyone wants to win a medal,” she said.

“I have been working hard to prepare for the Paris Olympics for many years. I am determined to give it my all and win another medal,” Chemutai added. “I know what to expect in Paris, but I am well prepared and ready for it.”

Other Ugandan star athletes to watch out for in Paris include world champions Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, who will compete in the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m events.

Dominic Otusate, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, told Xinhua that he is confident that Uganda will win medals in track and field events in Paris.

“Our 21 athletes have trained very hard and many of them now have experience and know what to do in a world event,” said Otouchette.
