Analysts believe that the United Democratic Front (UDF) founded by former President Bakili Muluzi appears to be facing financial challenges as the party has yet to decide on a new date after its electoral congress was indefinitely rescheduled to August 3 this year.
Party spokesperson Yusuf Mwawa told Nyasa Times this afternoon that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet soon to fix a new date for the convention. He said they were still receiving nomination forms from candidates who missed the recent submission deadline.
Mwawa said that for the presidency, the party had received nomination papers from only one candidate, former president Atupele Muluzi.
On July 27, the UDF postponed the national electoral conference indefinitely as candidates delayed filing nomination papers due to difficulty in gaining support.
But political expert Ernest Thindwa believes that the party and other opposition parties are facing a lack of financial resources to hold such a large conference and are therefore forced to postpone it
