September 1, 2024 (Abu Dhabi) – The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have signed an agreement to provide $7 million to support critical humanitarian efforts in Sudan and South Sudan.
The agreement allocates $6 million to UNICEF operations in Sudan and another $1 million to its activities in South Sudan.
The signing of the agreement confirms the UAE’s commitment to alleviating the severe humanitarian crisis in these countries.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has escalated into a severe crisis affecting children, with an estimated 13.6 million children in urgent need of assistance.
The conflict has forced more than six million people to flee their homes, more than half of them children, making Sudan the epicenter of the world’s largest child displacement crisis.
The UAE’s donation will directly support UNICEF’s efforts to ensure children and women in Sudan and South Sudan have access to primary health care, sufficient quality water, and education through formal and non-formal channels, including early learning programmes.
Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, said the UAE is firmly committed to supporting the most vulnerable groups affected by conflict, especially children who have borne the brunt of the crises in Sudan and South Sudan.
“Through this agreement with UNICEF, we will strengthen our resolve to provide life-saving assistance and ensure children have access to the basic services they desperately need,” he said.
The minister said the UAE will continue to support the brotherly Sudanese people in their hour of need and work with international partners to address pressing humanitarian challenges.
“This was amply demonstrated by the UAE’s recent participation as an observer in the Sudan talks in Geneva, which aimed to ensure that aid reaches those in need, especially the most vulnerable,” he stressed.
Over the past decade, the UAE has reportedly provided more than $3.5 billion in aid to the Sudanese people, demonstrating its commitment to helping those in need during times of crisis.
Since the conflict broke out in 2023, the UAE has provided $230 million in humanitarian aid and dispatched 159 relief flights, delivering more than 10,000 tons of food, medical and relief supplies.
In addition, the UAE built two field hospitals in Chad, providing medical treatment to more than 45,000 patients.
In addition, the UAE continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and an urgent cessation of violence as its main demand.
The country stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and stressed the importance of the warring parties seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict through dialogue.
