Chinese authorities warned that Typhoon Gaimei would bring heavy rains that could cause flooding.
They have relocated more than 290,000 people in Fujian province and closed public transportation, offices, schools and markets in some cities.
In neighboring Zhejiang province, footage broadcast by state broadcaster CCTV on Friday showed streets turning into rivers, with trees falling across roads and bicycles struggling to navigate knee-deep water.
Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, with a population of about 9 million, issued its highest-level rainstorm warning and evacuated nearly 7,000 people, CCTV reported.
The typhoon will also bring heavy rains to central Jiangxi and Henan, according to official media reports.
Guangdong, China’s most populous province, suspended some passenger train services on Friday ahead of the expected arrival of the typhoon, according to CCTV.
The TV station quoted China’s official weather website as saying the typhoon was moving northwest at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour.
The cyclone will “gradually weaken” when it reaches Jiangxi late Friday afternoon, the report said.
There are no reports of deaths or injuries so far.
China’s northern regions have also been hit by showers this week, with state media reporting on Friday that heavy rains in the northwestern province of Gansu had left one person dead and three people missing.
At a meeting of the country’s top leadership chaired by President Xi Jinping on Thursday, officials urged local authorities to “remain highly vigilant and proactive” as the country enters the peak flood season.
