Refugee agencies ask refugees to cooperate in moving to new shelters
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees told VOA that two people were killed in an attack by gunmen at the Olara refugee shelter in the Dar region of Western Gonda last week.
A refugee living in the shelter mentioned that those killed in the attack were a couple, “they were parents of five children.” He said. The refugee pointed out that the attack took place after the security measures in the shelter were lifted.
On the other hand, the UN Refugee Agency said that in order to close the Olara and Kumar shelters due to alleged security issues, they have started transferring refugees to a new shelter called Avtot in the same area.
A Sudanese refugee who left the Olara shelter two months ago and lives on the roadside after Saturday’s attack said: “We will not go to the new refugee shelter; the relevant parties should transfer us to a third country outside Ethiopia,” he said.
