In Kishoreganj in Nirfarmali, a clash broke out between the two BNP parties over the venue of the founding anniversary prayer ceremony. At least 10 people were injured in retaliatory brick-throwing and clashes.
The incident took place in front of the Babu Talkies hall in the upazila on Saturday (August 31) evening till 8.30 pm. Later, around 9.30 pm, both parties left the spot after seeing the Army and other joint forces patrolling.
The injured included Kishoreganj Sadar UP president and Nationalist Party member Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy Grenade Babu (45), BNP activist Lebu Miah (42), a resident of Kamarpara area in Sadar, Rishad (22), son of Sadekul Islam of Ismail area, BNP activist Noornabi (42), Lebu Mia (55), Habibullah (35), Jewel (18), Syed Ali (32), Jewel (44).
Talking to local and BNP leaders and activists, it was learnt that there has been a long-standing dispute between the current upazila committee of BNP and former general secretary Masud Rana Patwari over the formation of the committee. Both parties have separately implemented various schemes announced by the Centre. BNP leader Masud Rana Patwari along with the victims of discrimination decided to organise a doa mahfil at the Kishoreganj High School grounds on the occasion of the BNP’s founding anniversary on September 1 (Sunday).
On the other hand, the former BNPO decided to hold the venue at the same location on the occasion of the founding anniversary of Doa Mahfil. Since Saturday morning, the situation between the two sides has been tense over the restoration of the same venue.
In the meantime, Masood Rana Patwari got angry and threatened to meet the incumbent council chairman Abdullah Al Mamun and secretary AKM Tajul Islam Dalim on his mobile phone. Later in the evening, when the incumbent council chairman Abdullah Al Mamun was heading towards the market, leaders and activists of Masood Rana Patwari’s group tried to stop him in front of the shop of his brother, Sadar UP chairman Hussain Shaheed Sohrawardy Grenade Babu. Later, the incumbent council chairman’s workers got angry and faced off on the main road of the upazila city with batons and bricks in their hands. For a while, a clash broke out between the two factions.
The clash between the two sides lasted for about two hours. Masud Rana’s younger brother, Jatiya party member and Sadar UP president Hossain Shaheed Sohrawardy, Grenade Babu and 10 BNP leaders were injured. Later, the angry activists vandalized the shop of the Sadar UP president. All shops in the city were closed at that time. After this clash, the situation in the city was calm.
“They formed a committee of their own,” Masud Patwari, former BNP secretary general, told the Dhaka Post. “We excluded those who took to the streets for the baby. This committee was never able to protest, it was a committee fabricated by the Awami League. President Mamun was from the Nationalist Party and Dalim was made the Chhatra League secretary general. All the real sacrificial leaders and activists were excluded.”
He said, Sunday was the party’s foundation day. We were preparing to celebrate the day. Permission had been obtained from the school principal. Today suddenly I heard that they were going to perform here. Two parties must not be allowed to perform at the same place. Then I called Mamun and said, you are doing this to quarrel. Later I called the general secretary. I closed the shop in the evening and went to the market. Some of their boys came to my shop with sticks. When we gathered and chased them, they ran away. After some time, with the connivance of the Awami League, they attacked again, vandalized the chairman’s shop and injured the chairman.
In this regard, Upazila BNP Chairman Abdullah Al Mamun told Dhaka Post, “Masud Rana called and threatened to check on me in the morning. When I went to the market later in the evening, his brother, Greenard Babu, tried to stop me. Later I came back from there and informed the leaders and workers. When they heard the news and stood on the street, Masud Rana and his activists attacked. This angered my employees and they clashed with them.”
Palash Chandra Mondal, in-charge of Kishoreganj police station, told Dhaka Post that local police could not control the situation so they informed the Inspector General of Police. Then the joint forces including the Army actually had the situation under control. Both parties left the scene after seeing the joint patrol. The situation is normal now.
