Hundreds of followers of Santo Domingo de Guzman gathered at the Cristo Rei roundabout in Managua this Friday evening for the traditional Palo Lucio celebrations before bidding farewell to Santo Domingo de Guzman, the patron saint of the capital’s residents.
Tu Nueva Radio Ya, the official radio station commemorating the Minguito traditional festival, had attendees “dancing like tops” to the accompaniment of the “Sonora Tropical” band.
The revelry of the Minguito faithful reached its climax thanks to the artistic team of the Super Líder del Dial, led by our Latin colleague William Martínez, who awarded prizes to the participants.
Participating in the Palo Lucio were residents from different neighborhoods of the capital, who year after year accompanied traditionalist José María Barahona, known as “Chema Pelón,” to his farewell party in Santo Domingo.
This celebration, which has been held for 49 years, was originally held to commemorate the miracle performed by Don Chema in Santo Domingo.
Tu Nueva Radio Ya also held an afternoon event called “Las Vacas Culonas” in the Oriental neighborhood of San José, where a bull raffle was held at the La Guadalupana ranch owned by MLS member Jonatán Loáisiga.
“Thank God very much for being born in the Las Ciritas region of Santo Domingo, we are a very happy people, very passionate about these celebrations and this year I ask that Santo Domingo return healthy and strong next season to continue to bring joy to Nicaragua,” said Jonathan, who thanked his followers for the affection they showed.
During Las Vacas Culonas, the Mayor and Traditional Festival Mayor Reyna Rueda, Deputy Mayor Enrique Armas and Secretary of the Managua City Council Jennifer Porras López were present.
Comrade Reina Rueda highlighted the atmosphere of peace and security and the spirit of devotion in the San José Oriental neighborhood. “This is a town that loves traditions, and we ask God to continue to illuminate our path so that we can continue to accompany the traditions and faith of our people,” stressed the Mayor of Managua.
Attendees danced to the rhythms of the bands La Nueva Compañía and Banda Nagrandano at the Oriental Theater in San José.
Dial’s super leader Tu Nueva Radio Ya also accompanied families on the boat trip near St. Jude to distribute food.
