Yesterday, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago signed a $161 million contract with Trinidad and Tobago’s Namalco Group and its local partner GuyAmerica Construction Inc. to begin reconstruction of the more than half-century-old Linden/Southdyke Highway.
The supervision work will be undertaken by Kuwait’s Al-Habshi Engineering Company in cooperation with Guyana’s CB and Associates Inc., with a total amount of US$1.755 million.
The project is backed by a $206 million grant from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the first funding provided by the bank for a development project here. President Irfaan Ali said the two-year project not only aims to rehabilitate the road and install 2,900 street lights along the route, but also to create jobs in line with extensive future planning.
He said the project was expected to provide employment opportunities to about 300 persons from communities along the highway and provide skills training to many of them, therefore, he urged these people to grab the opportunities provided to them.
