Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday urged evangelicals to vote en masse in November’s presidential election to help him return to the White House, promising to “fiercely” protect religious freedom if elected.
“Evangelicals and Christians are not voting,” the Republican candidate told hundreds of attendees at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference at a Washington hotel.
“They go to church every Sunday, but they don’t vote. We have to make sure they vote this time because they only have to do it this once,” he asked. “You don’t have to vote in four years, OK? Not voting in four years, I don’t care,” he concluded, drawing laughter from the audience.
The tycoon assured evangelicals, who played a major role in his rise to power in 2016, that he would defend their beliefs. Trump has already delivered them historic victories, appointing three conservative justices to the Supreme Court and rescinding abortion rights across the United States in 2022.
“We will protect Christians in our schools, our military, our governments, our workplaces, our hospitals,” he promised.
He also said that if he returns to the presidency, he would set up a federal panel to investigate “discrimination” and “persecution” of Christians in the country. The former president, who is seeking a new term, accused Democrats of trying to keep followers of the religion “out of politics,” and the crowd responded with chants of “Vote, vote, vote.”
The Republican leader will face his Democratic rival, President Joe Biden, in a long-awaited televised debate next Thursday.
