Trump said in an interview with Fox News that he does not value people with families more.

“You know, you didn’t meet the right people, or you didn’t meet anybody. But you’re just as good, and in many cases, much better than people who have families,” Trump said.

Harris has two stepchildren with her husband, Doug Emhoff. Emhoff’s ex-wife called such attacks “baseless” and described Harris as a “loving, caring and fiercely protective” co-parent.

Trump said Vance had a difficult upbringing in Ohio and was largely raised by his grandmother, and he was just trying to show that he attaches great importance to family life.

“He grew up in a very interesting family environment, and he thought the family was great. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying that,” Trump said.

In the Fox interview, Trump also did not clarify whether he would participate in the Sept. 10 debate with Harris, which was originally scheduled to be against Biden.

“I may end up having a debate,” Trump said. “But I can also make a case for not doing it.”
