In an interview with the New York Post on the 14th (local time), former President Trump said, “I almost died,” and called the attack at the time “a very surreal experience.” The interview was conducted on a plane departing from Bedminster, New Jersey, where he stayed overnight after being injured in a gunshot at an outdoor campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, the day before, and flew to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the venue of the national convention.

“The doctor I met at the hospital said he had never seen anything like it,” former President Trump said. “The doctor said it was a miracle,” he said. “I shouldn’t be here. I almost died.”

The New York Post reported that former President Trump also explained the “mystery of the shoes.” In the previously released video of the shooting, former President Trump can be heard lying under the table and saying, “I’m going to get my shoes,” which raised people’s questions about the specific circumstances.

“The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off,” former President Trump said. “I usually wear sensible shoes,” he said.

He said the agents “did an amazing job, one bullet put him between both eyes.” “It’s surreal for all of us,” he said.

Former President Trump also mentioned a photo of him raising his fist and yelling “Fight!” “A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen,” he said. “They’re right, I’m not dead,” he said. “Usually you have to be dead to get an iconic photo. It’s either good luck or God. “A lot of people say I’m here because of God’s blessing.”

Former President Trump explained why he raised his hand at the time, saying: “This is to let people know that I am fine and to show that America is moving forward, we are moving forward, and we are strong.”

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close aide who attended the interview, said that “former President Trump feels like he has been given a ‘bonus life.’
