Donald Trump has failed to retract controversial comments in which he said his supporters “won’t have to vote anymore” if he wins the election in November.
The former president said in a speech last Friday that Christians wouldn’t have to worry about voting in four years if he wins back the White House. He was asked about the issue in a new interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News.
“It’s a simple statement. I say vote for me and you never have to vote again. And that’s true because we have to earn the vote. Christians are not a large voting bloc,” Trump said in the interview Tuesday night.
“Vote this time. I will put order back into this country and you won’t have to vote again. I don’t need your vote. You can continue not to vote,” he added.
“You’re saying that because you have four more years in office, people don’t have to vote for you. Is that what you’re saying?” Ingraham asked Trump, but Trump declined to answer directly.
Ingraham told Trump that his opponents said the comments meant there would be no election if he won the White House again.
Ingraham asked Trump about his comments that Christian supporters wouldn’t have to vote again in four years. Trump responded by saying that if Jews voted for Democrats, they should get checked out. Trump said he hadn’t heard about that, and what he meant was that Christians weren’t voting in large numbers.
“Christians don’t vote in high numbers. They vote in very small percentages. Why, I don’t know. Maybe they’re frustrated with what’s going on,” Trump said. “I said, ‘You don’t vote. I said, get out, you have to vote.’ But I said that to thousands of Christians in the room. I said, Christians generally don’t vote.
“Don’t worry about the future,” he continued. “You have to vote on November 5th. You don’t have to worry about voting after that. I don’t care because we’re going to fix this. This country is going to be fine. … We don’t even need your vote anymore because frankly, we’re going to get so much love.”
