(Trinidad Guardian) Gunmen opened fire on Moruga businessman Enrico Andy Guerra last night, killing him and his five-year-old daughter Anika Guerra.

The child died after being shot multiple times in the left face, lower back and arms. She died of her injuries at Prince Town Hospital at 10:20 p.m., less than half an hour after the shooting. Guerra died at the scene at his home in Puytres, in the village of Santa Marie, Moruga.

Police said Guerra, who goes by the nickname “Rico,” owned Enrico’s Corner Mart and was outside with his friend, 30-year-old St Mary’s Village resident Juston Weston, when the gunman opened fire around 9:45 p.m.

At the time, Guerra’s wife, Anastasia Hamilton, was combing her daughter’s hair in the supermarket. Police reported that when the gunshots rang out, Guerra tried to run into the store to escape, followed by the masked gunman.

Hamilton hid, trying to protect her daughter as gunfire echoed around them. When the shooting stopped, Guerra was dead, but Anika was still alive. Weston suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm and has been released from the hospital.

Guerra’s mother, Hesper Alidarsoo, a well-known community activist, posted on Facebook:

“They took my first child and they took his daughter… How am I going to pick up the pieces? God, please help me understand.”

Moruga Councilman Joseph Lorant wrote:

“May you have the strength to overcome this at this time. Enrico was truly a good man and he loved his daughter dearly. May their souls rest in peace.”

Police are investigating multiple leads.
