(Trinidad Express) Gunmen are on the rampage across the country, killing at least nine people in the 24 hours starting at 4pm on Friday.
Two women and seven men under the age of 45 were killed in shootings in northern, eastern and southern Trinidad, bringing the death toll this year to 315.
In one incident in Arima, a three-year-old boy narrowly escaped serious injury in a double murder involving another boy in the same room.
The series of shootings began at 4 p.m. Friday on Agostini Street in Belmont, where Hasani Bonas, 29, of Rudolph Charles Link Road in Laventille, and Jaheim Shalo, 19, of Rigsby Street in Belmont, were shot and killed.
They were said to be pulling over on the road when a convoy of three vehicles – a white van, a white Nissan AD station wagon and a silver Toyota Fielder – pulled up alongside them.
Several men got out of the car and opened fire, striking Bonas and Shalo multiple times.
Bonas died at the scene and Shalo was pronounced dead at 6.30pm while receiving treatment at the Port of Spain General Hospital.
A team of police officers led by Inspector Sooklalsingh, Inspector Forbes and Superintendent Mundoo responded.
Thirty-two spent 5.56mm bullet casings were found at the shooting scene.
Laventille
Jemerc Fonrose, 20, and Kerwin McLeod, 44, were shot and killed at Mango Rose in Laventille around 8:45 p.m. Friday.
The incident also injured a 66-year-old man.
Police said three men were sweeping the sidewalk when a silver Nissan Tiida pulled up next to them.
Three masked men exited the vehicle and opened fire at the group before returning to the vehicle and driving away.
Local residents informed the police and paramedics and the three injured were taken to Port of Spain General Hospital.
However, both Fonrose and McLeod died while receiving treatment.
The 66-year-old was in a serious but stable condition yesterday.
A team of police officers led by Inspector Sooklalsingh, Inspector Mohammed, Superintendent Ramcharitar, Superintendent Guevera, Superintendent Romeo and others responded.
Crime scene investigators found 11 spent 9mm shell casings, 13 spent 7.62mm shell casings, three spent 5.56mm shell casings and one live 7.62mm round at the shooting scene.
When The Sunday Express visited the scene yesterday, von Ross’s relatives said they were heartbroken by his killing.
They did not want to be named, saying the 20-year-old man left his home to buy food.
While he was waiting, the incident occurred and he was fatally wounded.
They said Fonrose worked at Holiday Snacks and was not normally a drug user, so the murder came as a shock to his family.
Relatives said: “He prefers playing games at home, and Call of Duty is his favorite.”
They also lamented that a police jeep was seen patrolling the area about 20 seconds before the shooting.
“Everything happened so fast. This should be the last thing people want to happen. Because just 20 seconds ago, a police car just drove by. And then there was chaos. I don’t know what happened here,” said a relative.
Big Blood
In Sangre Grande, Shawn Nigel George, 36, of Foster Road, was shot and killed in his home.
The incident also injured a 62-year-old man.
Police said relatives heard gunshots around 10 p.m. Friday and upon investigation, they found George lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
He appeared to have been shot several times in the chest.
Police and paramedics were informed and a team of officers led by ASP Russel and Sgt Baksh rushed to the spot.
Ten shell casings of 5.56mm ammunition were found at the scene.
While investigating, police learned that a 62-year-old man had been taken to St. Gray’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right arm.
He told investigators he was walking on Foster Road when he was hit by a suspected stray bullet.
Arima
Dwane Richardson, 35, and his wife Latoya Voisien, 31, were shot dead at their home in Terrace, Arima Maturita, around 3.50am yesterday.
Police were told that around 3:30 a.m., relatives at the home heard a series of loud explosions and then Richardson’s screams of pain.
Upon checking, they found Richardson lying on the bedroom floor and he appeared to have been shot multiple times.
Worthen was found face down in bed. She had been shot multiple times.
Two men were seen fleeing the scene on foot.
A team of officers led by Inspector Gonzalez-Lewis and Sergeant DeSuz responded.
Police learned that a three-year-old boy who was in the room at the time also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Arima Hospital for treatment.
Multiple bullets were found at the scene.
Relatives told the Sunday Express yesterday that Watson was a student under the Youth Training and Employment Partnership Program (YTEPP).
Richardson was said to be a construction worker.
Relatives, who asked not to be named, said they were still trying to understand why someone would want the two men dead.
However, despite the horrific situation, they said they were thankful the three-year-old was not harmed.
