A tribute to our legend. That’s why we drive at night Memory DrawerIt is intended to honour the greats of the Mauritian music scene who have left their mark on the island’s musical landscape throughout their careers.
In this new edition, the public will be able to enjoy on stage artists such as Georges Grenouille, Vishal Mungroo, Denis Azor, Sarojini Seeneevasen, Ras Natty Baby, Gaëtan Rivet and Yvon Adèle. They will be joined by Robert Duvergé, Benoit Carré, Karl Allet, Patrick Dumolard and Jocelyn Cartier for a show that is destined to be unforgettable. Each artist, who has enriched the Mauritian musical heritage, will reveal their unique universe through a few songs.
The artists will pay tribute to three late great jazz musicians: Ernest Wiehé, Noël Jean and René Louise. Their influence on local music is indelible and this celebration is an opportunity to relive the memory of these jazz greats.
The presence of Ras Natty Baby in the show was particularly important. This pioneer of Seggae music, now internationally recognised thanks to events such as Rototom Sunsplash, has not always received the tribute he deserves. His rich and varied career attests to the importance of his contribution to Mauritian music. Seggae continues to attract audiences and gain more and more recognition, as evidenced by recent interpretations by Marcus Gad and Renald Collet.
The Tiroir aux Souvenirs initiative was created in 2022 at the initiative of trumpeter Didier Jeewooth as a tribute to his mentor Claudio Cassimally. The project took shape quickly with the help of Rony Appadoo, who brought together a team of talented musicians to revive the work of the late artist.
The first edition was a great success and the new one aims to maintain this dynamism while enriching the experience. Rehearsals take place in the Cimiotti Studio in Quatre Bornes. “Rehearsals are an opportunity to build relationships, share memories and prepare a high-quality performance. Under the guidance of Rony Appadoo and Samuel Laval, the musicians work on arrangements, harmonies and nuances to deliver a coherent and moving performance.
Tickets are priced at Rs 800 and can be purchased on the Caudan Art Centre website or at reception, or directly from the organisers. Fans are urged to purchase tickets now as demand outstrips supply. Reiterating the success of the first edition (which was sold out) is a major challenge. Organisers had to balance staying true to the previous show with adding new features to deliver a refreshed, engaging show. Selling tickets within 35 days is an additional challenge, but the team remains optimistic about the success of this event.
