A scorching heat wave hits inland areas, placing Tras os Montes under red alert today and tomorrow. Tomorrow, temperatures could exceed 40°C in many places, especially in the interior of Alentejo, the Tagus and Douro valleys and northeast of Tras os Montes, where the worst temperature anomalies are expected. Mirandela expects a maximum of 44 degrees and Peso da Régua a maximum of 42 degrees.

The only regional capitals with temperatures below 30 degrees are Viana do Castelo and Porto (29 degrees) and Aveiro (27 degrees). The extreme heat stems from the fact that the mainland territory “is under the influence of the anticyclone to the north of the Azores, which extends with its crest to the Bay of Biscay, promoting the circulation, leading to higher temperatures, prolonging the situation. Meteorological reports of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere announced that hot and dry weather persists in inland areas.

Minimum temperatures will also rise, with tropical nights (minimums above 20°C) inland and in the leeward parts of the Algarve. From Monday onwards, temperatures will drop.
