Six weeks ago, a locomotive travelled 150 kilometres in reverse with no one on board, and TransNamib says it is still investigating what led to the accident, which many have described as “freak”.
The accident occurred on Friday, May 24, when a TransNamib locomotive carrying more than 20 trailers was parked at Oshiwelo, forcing the train to use its emergency brakes and causing damage to 10 trailers.
Namibian Railways officials drove past the train but were unable to stop it. Eventually, the railways called for the use of emergency brakes, which resulted in a collision with the train in the Omasaka area of Ondangwa, where railway officials managed to stop the locomotive and its trailer.
The train reportedly began to reverse as the driver and his assistant were checking for problems outside the train.
Unable to guess
Yesterday, TransNamib spokesperson Abigail Raubenheimer told The Namibian Sun that the investigation was ongoing and the company would only issue a statement once it was complete.
“The investigation is ongoing. Due to the critical nature of our operations, we prioritize the thoroughness of the investigative process,” she said.
“As stated in our policy, TransNamib is required to follow established and detailed procedures for all accident investigations. We are required to complete this process before providing definitive information on the cause of the derailment. Therefore, we cannot speculate on the cause of the accident until the investigation is completed.”
