St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Traffic officials are concerned about an increasing number of drivers deliberately driving without wearing seatbelts. The issue has become more pressing as the number of related tickets issued in the first six months of 2024 increased compared to the same period in 2023.
Data from the transportation department shows that 410 tickets were issued to drivers and passengers for not wearing seatbelts between January and July 2023. During the same period in 2024, that number increased to 440, according to Officer Sophia Henry.
Another emerging problem is that many drivers drive with children under the age of five without proper child seats. The 2024 figures were almost identical to the previous year, with 37 violations recorded in 2023 and 30 in 2024.
Despite repeated calls from police to be vigilant and follow safety measures, many drivers continue to ignore the warnings. Hefty fines have been introduced to address this problem. Drivers caught using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt will be fined EC$150, while those who do not transport children in a suitable child seat will be fined EC$200.
