On the morning of February 17, Tony Blair’s speech on Brexit was met with predictable derision. Today, the former prime minister is a Rorschach test for audience disgust: to the left, he supports free-market capitalism and war; to the right, he supports mega-metropolitan internationalism; to some of his former followers, he supports how not to preserve one’s legacy after leaving politics. In parts of Westminster and Fleet Street, to express a subtle opinion about Mr Blair is met with confusion and repulsion, like ordering veal in a vegetarian restaurant.
