Hamilton mezzo-soprano Katie Trigg has won the prestigious 2024 Lexus Song Contest, with the New Zealand-born Tongan Manasseh Ratu was named runner-up. The awards were announced live at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on Saturday 3 August.
Katie Trigg received a $50,000 career development cash award, while Manasseh Ratu received $20,000. Grammy Award-winning Lyric Brilliance soprano Sumi Jo, the international lead judge, praised the high caliber of all five finalists. “The talent displayed by these young singers is extraordinary,” she said.
Third place went to Austin Haynes, who won $15,000. Other finalists Tayla Alexander and Andrew Morgan-King each received $3,500.
Andrew Davis, vice president of Lexus New Zealand, said the event was a highlight of the New Zealand Classical Music Festival. “We enjoyed some fantastic performances at the Lexus Song Quest,” he said.
Looking back on the event, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa said: “The Discovery has always been the gold standard for discovering the stars of tomorrow.” The next Lexus Song Discovery will be held in 2026.
