Tonga Cable Company has confirmed that the cable vessel Rodbrugge, which arrived in Tonga last week, located the southern end of Tonga’s damaged domestic submarine cable on Wednesday and is making progress towards restoring full fibre optic communications to the northern Vava’u and Haapai Islands.
Sosafate Kolo, CEO of Tonga Cable Agency, reported that the distance between the broken ends of the cable is less than 50 kilometers, and that ongoing adjustments may reduce this distance to about 10 kilometers. “The repair vessel is currently replacing the damaged section and will start the connection process soon,” Kolo said. If the damaged section of the cable exceeds 50 kilometers, the repair will be further delayed. Currently, the repair is scheduled to be completed by the end of this week.
The damage to the cable was first discovered after the 29 June earthquake, due to several submarine landslides. Evidence suggests that the earthquake triggered multiple landslides, burying parts of the cable about 96 kilometres from Tongatapu Island.
This development is critical for Tonga as the country aims to fully restore its fiber-optic communications and address the impact of the cable outage on its communities and services.
