Tonga will advance its climate action efforts through the proposed Tonga Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) project, aimed at improving its ability to track progress towards its greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
The Ministry of Climate Change is working with stakeholders and partners to develop a proposal for the initiative, which falls under the Paris Agreement Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
The three-year, $1.3 million CBIT project aims to address key challenges in data management, institutional arrangements and capacity building. The initiative is supported by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which hosted a validation workshop for the project.
According to GGGI, the CBIT project aims to improve Tonga’s ability to transparently monitor and report progress on its climate goals. This effort is in line with the Paris Agreement’s requirement for Parties to set and track national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
Mihwa Wi, CBIT Project Manager at GGGI, stressed that the program will build on existing systems, strengthen them and address gaps. “The CBIT project provides an important capacity-building opportunity to better enable all participants to contribute to Tonga’s climate resilience and transparency goals,” said Wi.
Although Tonga’s greenhouse gas emissions are small, the project highlights the disproportionate impact of climate change on smaller countries. It sets a precedent, showing that even countries that contribute the smallest amount to global emissions can be severely affected by climate-related consequences.
