On June 21, the summer solstice, millions of people around the world came together for the tenth time to celebrate International Yoga Day, established by the United Nations in 2014. The theme of this event is “Yoga Empowers Women.” The goal is to transform yoga into a mainstream movement that emphasizes women’s well-being and promotes global health and peace.

How did International Yoga Day come about?
The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, in collaboration with the UN Secretariat, is organizing a major public event at the UN Headquarters in New York.
International Yoga Day was established in 2014 by a resolution proposed by India (69/131) and approved by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his opening speech at the 69th UN General Assembly, in which he stated: “Yoga is a priceless gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies the unity of body, mind and action… A holistic approach is invaluable to our health and well-being. Yoga is more than just a physical exercise; it is a way to discover a sense of oneness with oneself, the world and nature.” In the following years, the Prime Minister was repeatedly criticized for using yoga to support the government’s nationalist policies, Many international observers pointed out.
A grand event at Arena Civica in Milan
In Milan, the event is organized, as always, by Yoga Festival and sponsored by the City of Milan and the Italian Federation of Hinduism. This year, Sara Bigatti, one of the most followed yoga teachers on social media, from La Scimmia Yoga (named after her community), will lead everyone (beginners, practitioners and expert yogis) in the practice. Accompanying her will be the musician, composer, painter and writer Nicola artigianato, who has studied traditional Indian mantras and kirtans for many years with the music therapist Silvia Chitrini Papadia.
