The 51-year-old Belgian technician was officially appointed as the head coach of the Mali Eagles on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The first vice president of the Mali Football Association announced the news on national television.
Tom Saintfiet takes over as captain of the Mali Eagles from Éric Sékou Chelle. The duration of his contract has not yet been determined, but according to our information, the two parties have agreed on a two-year renewable partnership. The former Gambia coach has a difficult task ahead of him to get Mali back to the 2026 World Cup, qualify for the 2025 World Cup in Canada and reach at least the semi-finals.
Tom Sanfit has 18 years of coaching experience and knowledge of African football. He has coached the national teams of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Malawi and Togo.
But it was in The Gambia that the Belgian technician achieved his greatest achievement on the African continent. From 2018 to 2024, he led the Scorpions to help The Gambia qualify for the 2021 CAN competition for the first time in history, reaching the quarter-finals, and then went on to lead the Scorpions to a second consecutive qualification for the 2023 CAN competition. In 2022 and 2023, he was named one of the best coaches in Africa at the CAF Awards.
Tom Saintfiet will begin his adventure in the official match against Mali on the third day of the 2025 CAN qualifiers, and while waiting to take over, Badra Alou Diallo, known as Conty, will lead the team in the first two days of matches against Mozambique and Swaziland on September 6. The Eagles roster for these two meetings is expected to be announced on August 31 and 10, 2024, respectively.
