A family in the south is mourning the loss of their loved one who died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident nine days ago. Just after midnight on July 13, Belize Defense Force soldier Venancio Coy Jr. was struck by a motorcycle in Cattle Landing Village in Toledo. The 31-year-old was reportedly leaving a nightclub when he was knocked to the sidewalk on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway. The father of one was seriously injured and was initially taken to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the Carl Hausner Memorial Hospital where he died last night. His godfather, Alfonso Sanchez, spoke to our newsroom about Coy’s condition and called his death a blow to the Toledo area.
The deceased godfather Alfonso Sanchez: “A lot of people would say don’t wait until someone dies to say he’s OK, but I can testify and I can tell the world today that this godson showed me total love from the first day I became his godfather. In fact, he made me his godfather because I was single when I became his godfather and a few years later when we got married, he made my wife his godmother. He gave us total love. He gave us total respect. I always shared with my wife, even when I was very sick, you know, I went through life-threatening surgeries myself, you know he came to visit me and I can certainly say that his love for me was always there, you know, and now I have to not only give him credit but we maintained that relationship throughout his life. He would always take the time to wish me a happy birthday, wish my sons a happy birthday, congratulate them when they were doing well, call me or his godmother on their birthdays, and even stop by for a hot bowl of Caldo. That was the love that he had for us. It was similar to the love that he shared with us, the genuine love that he gave to the entire community.”
Coy is a resident of Great Falls, Toledo.
