The TV series “My Eyes Love You” starring Korean actor Chae Jong-hyup and Japanese actress Nikaido Fumi will be broadcast on Tokyo Broadcasting System TV (TBS) from January to March 2024. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD will be released on August 2. The series aired on Netflix and became one of the few Japanese TV series to rank among Korean viewers for two consecutive months. Producer Keisuke Nakajima expressed surprise and satisfaction with its success.

Inspired by the popularity of Korean dramas in Japan, Nakajima launched the project in the summer of 2021. Casting was difficult due to the high salaries of Korean actors. In order to control costs, Nakajima found the talented actor Chae Jong-hyup, who had not yet played the leading role.

Misunderstandings caused by script translation and cultural differences often occurred on the set, but Nakajima and his team worked hard to resolve these issues and improve the visual quality in order to appeal to fans of Korean dramas.

The collaboration was beneficial to both parties. The Japanese team learned Korean production techniques and gained access to a global audience. For the Koreans, it provided an opportunity amid rising production costs at home.

TBS and CJ ENM plan to produce at least three TV series and two movies in the next three years. TV Asahi has reached a cooperation agreement with Korean studio SLL, and Netflix will produce “The Unknown Romanticist” starring Oguri Shun and Han Hyo Joo.

The collaboration between Tokyo and Seoul marks a growing trend of co-productions between the two cities’ entertainment industries. The success of Eye Love You highlights the potential for future projects to attract audiences across borders.
