Tokayev refuses to pardon Massimov

Central Asia (KZ) – Kazakh President Tokayev agreed to deny pardon to Karim Massimov, former head of the National Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who was convicted of treason and attempted seizure of power, the Presidential Office reported. Responding to Informburo.kz’s request.

On June 27, the Pardon Committee of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan considered the pardon application of the convicted Massimov.

“Based on the results of the study of the possibility of granting a pardon to Massimov, the commission made a corresponding recommendation to the head of state, who agreed,” the response to the request said.

It is noteworthy that the authors of the petition have been informed of the decision.

Earlier, the chairman of the Pardon Committee, member of parliament Marat Bashimov, reported that Karim Massimov was convicted of treason and attempting to seize power but was denied pardon.

Karim Masimov was detained in the events of January 2022. The criminal case against him was classified as “top secret”. In late April 2023, an Astana court sentenced Karim Masimov to 18 years in prison for treason, attempted violent seizure of power, abuse of power and abuse of authority. He tried to challenge the verdict, but the appeals court upheld it.

Meanwhile, the pretrial investigation of Massimov continues under Article 218, Part 3, Paragraph 3 (legalization of money and other property obtained by criminal means (money laundering)) and Article 366, Part 4 (particularly large-scale acceptance of bribes) of the Criminal Code.
