After the Electoral Court ordered the PRTB to suspend the social networks of São Paulo mayoral candidate Pablo Marçal, the influencer called on his more than 13 million followers to register his groups on Telegram and WhatsApp. In reality, the strategy is a way to circumvent the court’s decision, allowing the candidate to maintain his strong digital presence. Marçal attributes the decision of the São Paulo Regional Electoral Court (TRE-SP) to censorship.
On Saturday morning, Marçal went live on Instagram to announce that he would lose his internet access and criticized the decision. “Because I cannot win votes, some people want to stop me, some want to kill me,” he said. Marçal has the biggest internet presence among the São Paulo mayoral candidates, with 13 million followers on Instagram alone. Vice Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) is the second largest social media presence, with 2.3 million users.
The strategy of inviting followers to join Telegram and WhatsApp groups has been supported by the PRTB campaign and Marçal’s allies, who have shared artworks encouraging the former coach’s supporters to migrate to these messaging applications.
