Maria Carol Santiago breaks Paralympic record; Gabriele Zigno also qualifies.

This Monday morning (2nd), 10 Brazilians took part in the Paralympic swimming trials at the La Defensa Arena, in addition to the 4×100 medley relay (34 points). A total of 8 athletes advanced to medal contention, including Maria Carolina Santiago, who broke the Paralympic 50m freestyle S12 record. In addition to being an athlete from Pernambuco, Gabrielzinho also won a place in the 200m freestyle final – S2 and is looking for his third gold medal of these Paralympic Games.

The finals of the fourth swimming day of the Paralympic Games will be held at 12:30 (Brasilia time). In addition to Maria Carol Santiago and Gabrielzinho, the following athletes will be included: Edenia Garcia and Maiara Pereira Barreto (50m backstroke – S3); João Pedro Brutos de Oliveira (100m breaststroke – SB14); Beatriz and Debora Carneiro (100m backstroke – SB14) and Bruno Becker da Silva (200m freestyle – S2)

On the other hand, the following were excluded from the decision: Gabriel Cristiano Silva (50m freestyle – S9); Lucilene Souza (50m freestyle – S13) and 4×100 medley relay – 34 points, disqualified in the first heat.

Maria Carol Santiago, a swimmer from Pernambuco, set a new Paralympic record in the 50m freestyle S12 qualifying round and secured her place in the final with the best total time (26.71). On the other hand, Lucilene Sousa from Pará failed to qualify for the final with a time of 28.65.

The highlight of the men’s qualifying was Gabrielzinho from Minas Gerais. The 22-year-old has already won two gold medals at this Olympics and qualified in another final. Gabriel Araújo confirmed the favorite for the gold medal in the 200m freestyle – S2 event with the best overall result. This was his penultimate race at the Paris Paralympics. The Minas Gerais native will end his participation in the 50m freestyle S3 in Paris 2024 on September 6.
