TikTok tourists trample Angkor Wat, sparking ‘Temple Run’ craze

One of the hottest viral trends features people running, jumping and crashing around Cambodia’s historic Angkor Wat and other temple sites in the Southeast Asian country, a live recreation of a popular video game that has alarmed conservationists, some of whom say the race for attention demeans the nearly 900-year-old sculptures and risks causing irreparable damage.

Short videos of tourists running along narrow stone paths and jumping across passages, often overlaid with sound effects from the popular game Temple Run, have gone viral on TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms. Some videos have been viewed more than 2 million times and inspire copycats every day.

Simon Warrack, a conservationist who has worked for three decades to protect the nearly thousand-year-old Angkor monuments, is concerned about the potential destruction and the trampling of cultural and religious beliefs.
