New York: Francis Tiafoe advanced to the last 16 of the US Open with a 4-6 7-5 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3 win over Ben Shelton on Friday.
Both players had previously reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, and in the end, the energetic Tiafoe prevailed in a thrilling four-hour battle, a repeat of last year’s quarter-final clash, when Shelton Jr. won in four sets.
The two players are good friends off the court, but they put their friendship aside and after Shelton promised a “war,” the clash lived up to expectations, with the crowd standing ovations during several scores and comebacks as the game progressed.
Shelton, who had a 2-0 record against the opponent before the match, served 23 aces and 63 winners, but Tiafoe got her revenge, winning her fourth-round match against either defending champion Novak Djokovic or Alexey Poplin.
