Tia Clayton advances to 100m final; Fraser-Pryce withdraws

PARIS, France — 19-year-old Jamaican Tia Clayton swept all opponents in 10.89 seconds to win three gold medals in the women’s 100m semifinals, beating Britain’s Daryl Netta and American Tewanesha Terry in 10.97 and 11.07 seconds respectively.

Germany’s Gina Lueckenkemper finished fourth in 11.09 seconds.

Clayton will be Jamaica’s sole representative in tonight’s final, which takes place in just over an hour. Early reports suggested Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was injured in the warm-up.

Julian Alfred of Saint Lucia won the second place in the women’s 100m semi-final with a stunning time of 10.84 seconds, beating American favorite and world champion Shakari Richardson (10.89 seconds). Gina Mariam Bas-Bitaye of Gambia took third place in 11.10 seconds. Patrizia van der Veken was fourth in 11.13 seconds.

In the first women’s 100m semi-final at the Stade de France, Sashali Forbes finished sixth. Forbes’ time was 11.20 seconds, with Melissa Jefferson of the United States winning in 10.00 seconds and Marie-Jossi Ta Lou-Smith of Côte d’Ivoire finishing second in 11.01 seconds. Mukinga Kambiangi of Switzerland finished third in 11.05 seconds and Ewa Svoboda of Poland finished third in 11.08 seconds.
