Residents of Marathon, the birthplace of the Marathon race, have been asked to move to neighbouring Nova Macri following the evacuation of six settlers in the area.

The Athens Olympic Centre, about 30 kilometres from the marathon venue and the main venue for the 2004 Olympics, saw eight people evacuated to hospital due to respiratory problems.

The fire broke out at 3 pm on Sunday in Varnavas, about 35 kilometers from Athens. Due to hot weather and strong winds, the fire spread quickly and thick smoke covered most of Athens, about 100 kilometers from the settlement of Varnavas near Marathon Strand. Meanwhile, firefighters are working to control the fire, which stretches for miles in northeastern Attica.

In response to the fire, about 400 firefighters, 110 firefighting helicopters, soldiers and volunteers have been working to control the fire. In the past 24 hours, the fire brigade has put out 40 wildfires across Greece.

After winter, summer arrives at its hottest season, with Greece experiencing its hottest months in June and July, which are expected to be the hottest ever. Meanwhile, Greece experiences many wildfires every summer related to heat waves and forest fires. This year, two people died in wildfires, while last year 20 deaths were reported.
