Ciphertext.- New Zealand police reported Thursday they had seized an undisclosed amount of 29 methamphetamine candies that were being distributed unknowingly by an Auckland charity.
New Zealand authorities seized 13 adulterated sweets last night as part of Operation Tirada, adding to 16 confiscated since their contents were discovered on Tuesday, New Zealand police said in a statement today.
Auckland police Inspector Glen Baldwin said the discovery of the sweets, which came in Rinda-branded wrappers, represented “an encouraging development, but the hurling operation is still working to determine exactly how many sweets may be in circulation”.
New Zealand Police also reported today that they had contacted Malaysia-based Rinda as part of an investigation to determine how the drugs ended up as charitable donations.
He also sought to clarify a complaint against a person who allegedly tried to sell the candies on Facebook, though his investigation was in its initial stages.
Anti-poverty NGO Auckland City Mission reported Tuesday the discovery of the drug-laced candies, which were donated by an unidentified person and distributed in more than 300 food packages in recent weeks.
One adult and three minors were affected by ingesting the candies and received medical attention but did not require hospitalization.
The deadly contents of the sweets became known after a recipient of the food packages contacted the charity after detecting a “strange” taste in the sweets.
Analysis by the New Zealand Anti-Drug Foundation said the sweets contained about three grams of methamphetamine, the equivalent of 300 doses of the drug.
