Due to his tremendous contributions to local and international “12-string entertainment” and his successful career as a businessman and professional wrestler, District 14 House candidate Edgar Robles formally requested advancement today, Sunday. Carlos Edwin Colón González, better known around the world as Carlitos Colón, Inducted into the Puerto Rico Hall of Fame. He also proposed naming a sports facility after him.
“If there is one person who represented us well both locally and on the international stage, it was the so-called ‘Puerto Rican Acrobat,’ who no longer belongs to us but to the entire world… Who doesn’t know the extensive career of Carlitos Colon and the great feuds he had with fighters of all abilities? With great respect, we thought it was worthwhile to pay tribute to him during his lifetime, an honor he earned long ago,” said Robles.
Likewise, he commented, “The unique song that brought Carlitos Colón into the ‘ring’ was “Soy Boricua,” written by Bobby Valentín and Marvin Santiago.”
Colon is a Puerto Rican professional wrestler from Santa Isabel who has wrestled for various wrestling organizations, including the NWA, WCW and WWF. He co-founded the World Wrestling Council, originally Capitol Sports Promotions, with Victor Jovica and has served as vice president since its inception.
The Puerto Rican wrestler is a 28-time world champion, having won the WWC World Heavyweight Championship twice and the WWC World Heavyweight Championship 26 times, which is his all-time record of more world championships than Ric Flair and John Cena. In addition, he has also been a 9-time WWC Puerto Rican Heavyweight Champion, a 1-time WWC World Junior Heavyweight Champion and a 3-time WWC World Tag Team Champion.
In 2014, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. However, he has not yet been inducted into the Puerto Rican Hall of Fame.
“It is time to honor our flag with his name, along with many other athletes such as Orlando Cepeda, Roberto Alomar, Ivan Rodriguez and Edgar Martinez. His achievements are remarkable,” stressed the candidate for the House of Representatives of the 14th District.
Carlitos Colon returned last night to the billboard of WWC, the company he founded decades ago in the city of Bayamon, for what is called his “last mission”. He stressed that “his career began in 1966 and for 51 years he has been committed to the development of lucha libre wrestling in markets such as Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and the United States.”
“The legacy of Carlitos Colon must be recognized as one of the most important pillars of our culture, entertainment or sports… His tremendous contribution to lucha libre and Puerto Rican identity deserves to be immortalized. For this reason, we propose that he be inducted into the Puerto Rican Hall of Fame and that a sports stadium be named after him in recognition of his tireless dedication and achievements,” Robles said.
The application aims to honor Columbus’ sporting achievements, but also to celebrate the positive impact he still has on society. “Naming a sports stadium after him will allow his legacy to continue to inspire future generations. His passion, perseverance and love for our ‘sport’ have left an indelible mark on the history of our islands… Making this joy a reality, naming a sports stadium after him is not only an act of justice, but also a way of saying thank you for the pride and joy you have given us for more than four decades,” he insisted.
Robles concluded: “This is a time for the people to unite and celebrate a true hero of our culture…May his name remain forever in a place that inspires everyone, just as he continues to inspire generations of Puerto Ricans.”
