Mexico City (apro) – The Union Assembly urged the Secretariats of Security and Civil Protection, Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, and Tourism to address insecurity on the roads of the national territory.
Motor vehicle thefts increased by more than 4% in 2023 compared to 2022. Last year, federal and local jurisdictions reported 13,848 thefts, while in 2022, 13,220 thefts were reported.
In addition, 86% of robberies are violent crimes, with more than half of them occurring in the states of Mexico and Puebla. Stolen goods cause losses of 7 billion pesos per year.
In light of this situation, the plenary session of the Standing Committee of the European Assembly approved an opinion urging the aforementioned Secretariat to strengthen intelligence programmes to combat organized crime on the country’s highways.

The legislative body said in a statement that the opinion aims to support the development of police intelligence and provide those responsible for road safety with information and tools to reduce the unsafe conditions faced by transporters.
Morenoist Senator Nawal Alberto Rojas Mancera said the adoption of this opinion “aims to raise awareness among public administrations of the constant concern of citizens about the dangers and uncertainties they face on Mexico’s roads”.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among local, state and federal authorities and the need to provide resources to the agencies responsible for monitoring the roads that traverse our nation.
The opinion emphasizes that police intelligence “is used as a tool to provide the necessary information to provide an operational response to certain specific problems through police methods or interventions, through a cyclical process of collection, evaluation and analysis, interpretation and dissemination of its use, which ends with an evaluation of the results.”
