Today’s cabinet reshuffle was seen as a golden opportunity for Theresa May to achieve two things: consolidate her authority within the Conservative Party after her general election defeat and reinvigorate the party to counter the growing threat from Jeremy Corbyn. However, she has failed to achieve either goal.
The biggest change of the day is that David Lidington, a relatively unknown figure in Major’s government, will replace Damian Green as Cabinet Office secretary of state, where he will chair about 20 cabinet committees and coordinate policy. (Mr. Lidington will no longer hold Mr. Green’s important-sounding but practically meaningless title of deputy prime minister.) James Brokenshire will also retire as Irish secretary of state. But this is mainly because of health reasons (Mr. Brokenshire needs lung surgery) rather than political necessity. His successor will be Karen Bradley, another May loyalist.
