A saltwater crocodile that terrorized a remote Australian community by clawing at dogs and pouncing on children ended up dying in a feast cooked by locals. The 12-foot-long reptile “had been stalking and lunging out of the water at children and adults,” Northern Territory police said in a statement.
“The alligators also took several dogs from the community.”
Police said they shot the scaly predator on Tuesday after speaking with elders and traditional landowners in the Burra community.
“The community prepares the feast in the traditional way,” they said.
Police said the crocodile migrated to a river near homes in the area, about six hours’ drive south of Darwin, during floods earlier this year.
The animal ended up being the main ingredient in several meals, Sergeant Andrew McBride told Australian public broadcaster ABC.

“I think it was cooked in alligator tail broth, put on the barbecue, and some of the pieces were wrapped in banana leaves and cooked underground,” McBride said.
“It’s a feast.”
Commander Kelly Anderson said “alligators can pose a significant risk to community safety” and praised officers and residents for working closely together to address the issue.
“There’s never a dull moment in remote policing,” Anderson said.
The Northern Territory government said it “uses a strategic risk-based management approach to determine the level of management activity for crocodiles”.
Crocodiles are highly mobile and have had dangerous encounters with people in Australia from time to time. Earlier this year, a Queensland man was fishing in a creek on New Year’s Eve when a crocodile jumped onto a fishing boat.
Last year, Australia’s Northern Territory’s top politician said it was time to “consider” resuming crocodile hunting following an attack at a popular swimming spot.
In May 2023, a man survived an attack by a crocodile while diving off the coast of North Queensland, Australia, after the crocodile’s jaws were pried from his head. In the same month, the remains of an Australian man who went missing in crocodile-infested waters were found inside the bodies of two reptiles.
