There is no evidence that the PNCR’s internal elections are not credible

Dear Editor,

Now that I have gone through and done with the internal elections of the PNCR, for the second time in a row, without any proof or credible evidence of its fairness, I will take a moment to expose those who are hostile to any good that comes out of the PNCR; and those who have to judge everything by the climate of corruption that has enveloped the country, a climate of corruption that was actually created by them and the way some of them like Jagdeo, Ramson, Gunraj et al., conduct themselves, which I will describe below.

Unable to discredit voting practices during the recent PNCR internal elections, they used the time between the close of polls and the announcement of results to maliciously insinuate malfeasance or incompetence on the part of CEC members. Obviously, they can only insinuate, as there is no evidence to support their contention. They speculate that the time taken to announce results (rather than count them) means someone is playing dirty, or is incompetent. This seems to be the nature of Guyanese politics. Every possible means must be used, at any cost, to discredit the other party. According to Jagdeo, “that’s politics”. Here are some facts that expose their machinations.

1. PNCR hired a contractor to conduct internal elections. If the contractor fails in any form or manner, how does this show that PNCR is incompetent and/or unable to run the country?

2. The results of the elections for key PNCR officials were announced on election night. Does this indicate that the institution is not doing its job well?

3. Any detractors lack sufficient knowledge and/or honesty about the time the counting actually took. Jagdeo and others are trying to justify their “alleged” concerns by trumpeting that the process took six days, while in the case of Jagdeo, Gunraj and Ramson, they are trying to portray the PPP as a superior organization because their results were announced in a shorter time. In reality, the PNCR’s counting of the CEC votes took no more than 36 hours over three days: Tuesday to Thursday. The counting was conducted over approximately 12 hours per day, and instead of continuous counting, Jagdeo inadvertently revealed the methodology used by Robeson Benn and team for the PPP counting. How can continuous counting over several days be compared to a 36-hour count, not to mention the difference in the number of people involved in the counting and the fact that the PPP counting was conducted by actual representatives like Benn?

4. Their lack of knowledge and/or bad faith further exposes their foolish arguments: If the 2021 PNCR vote count was completed in three days, then the time taken in 2024 is a sign of incompetence or misconduct. In 2021, the ballots were counted simultaneously in 11 regions. In 2024, the ballots were counted sequentially in one central location. There is no basis for the time taken to count ballots simultaneously in 11 locations and in one location. Jagdeo’s arguments expose his intellectual deficiencies and his cunning nature in trying to discredit others.

The PNCR contractor conducted the vote count efficiently in terms of time and manpower, and more importantly, conducted a poll that even Jagdeo could not fault, but he made a sly, mischievous and baseless attempt to insinuate incompetence or malfeasance during the vote count. In all he did, he once again demonstrated his own intellectual bankruptcy, cheap politicking and bad faith. Jagdeo should be held accountable for the corruption and profligacy that became the norm during his administration, rather than being allowed to discredit others by any means possible in order to retain power in his government.

Sincerely,

Vincent Alexander
