Information Minister Emma Theophilus has urged Namibians to be “cautious and responsible” on social media, saying recent insults directed at former presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba are regrettable.

In a statement yesterday, Theophilus said the government remained committed to protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms, but those rights should not be abused. “There is no need to legislate to regulate the moral behavior of individuals,” she said.

The young minister noted that there had been speculation on social media about Nujoma’s recent hospitalization, where some people announced on social media that he had died. Nujoma had recently been released from hospital.

“As we navigate the digital sphere, let us remember the importance of upholding ethical standards, verifying information before sharing it, and promoting constructive and respectful online interactions and dialogues,” the minister said.
