A scientific study shows that the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator is one of the dirtiest places in the kitchen, with 8,000 bacteria growing per square centimeter.

This is 750 times higher than safe human levels.

These bacteria can be dangerous, such as salmonella, E. coli, listeria, especially when the vegetables are rotten. Washing produce only removes some of them.

The European recommendation for food cleaning surfaces is a maximum of 10 units of bacteria per square centimeter.

Experts recommend cleaning the refrigerator at least once a month with warm water and soap, especially the fruit and vegetable compartment. Since this is very labor-intensive, there is a simpler solution. The drawer bottoms and walls can be covered with foil. It is easy to replace when it gets dirty. This can even be done once a week.
