U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris attracted enough Democratic delegate votes to win the presidential nomination.
This was announced on Friday, August 2 by Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison.
At an online event on Friday, Harrison said, “Harris received a majority of votes from all convention delegates and will be nominated as the Democratic nominee when voting closes on Monday.” Harris herself said on Twitter that she was “honored” to be nominated as a candidate for the US presidency and would formally accept the nomination next week.
Harris added: “This sport is about people coming together, motivated by their love for their country, to fight for the best that we have.”
Democratic delegates voting for the vice presidential candidate began the day before, on August 1. Due to legal subtleties in some states regarding the timing of presidential candidate registration, the voting was held before the party convention in Chicago, which will be held from August 19 to 22. The final results of the delegates’ vote will be announced on Tuesday evening, August 6.
Kamala Harris will become the first black woman and first Asian American to be a major party presidential candidate in the United States. Harris’s candidacy comes after U.S. President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race and backing the vice presidential nomination.
Next week, she will hold campaign events in key states with the vice presidential nominee who has yet to be named, but media outlets have suggested it will be Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
