The US Department of Defense said it is continuing to take steps to reduce the possibility of escalation in the region.
In order to maintain the presence of aircraft carrier strike groups in the Middle East, Secretary of Defense Austin ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group currently deployed to the Central Command area of responsibility.
Additionally, Austin ordered the deployment of additional missile defense cruisers and destroyers to the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command regions. The agency is also taking steps to increase readiness to deploy more base-based missile defense systems.
The Secretary of State also ordered the dispatch of a fighter squadron to the Middle East to bolster U.S. air defense support capabilities.
These posture adjustments complement the U.S. military’s extensive capabilities in the region.
The U.S. Department of Defense retains the ability to deploy troops at short notice to respond to evolving national security threats, but it is worth noting that the United States remains focused on easing tensions in the region.
