Union membership in the United States has been declining for decades. But in 2022, support For American unions Highest It has been that way for decades. The disharmony is due in part to the difficulty of an important stage in the life cycle of a union: getting a union established in the first place. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In 2008, Volkswagen announced that it would re-establish its production base in the United States after a 20-year absence, and planned to build a new automobile manufacturing plant in Chattanooga.
Volkswagen has plants around the world, all of which have some form of worker representation, and the company has said it wants the same in Chattanooga. As a result, the UAW, the union that traditionally represents autoworkers, thinks they can successfully organize the plant.
They were wrong.
