Date: 7 July 2024 Following the revelation by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation that diploma trading is going on in private universities, the Ministry of High Education, Science, Research and Innovation has appointed a committee to investigate the facts, chaired by Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and sent a letter to the qualified members of the Board of Directors of Private Universities. Three members of the Board of Directors appointed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment are to follow up and verify the situation and report immediately to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Ms. Supamas further said that the private university was previously regulated by the Ministry of Higher Education from March 14, 2023 to June 4, 2024 due to issues with the application of academic positions not complying with the regulations of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC). During this period, you can rest assured that the wrong diploma will not be issued because the Ministry of Vocational Education strictly controls it. This may be the reason why there are cases in the news where people spend money but do not get the agreed degree.

“In the future, the Ministry of Vocational Education will conduct a retrospective investigation of the facts and then control whether the reported diploma trading behavior has occurred. If it does constitute a crime, severe measures will be taken in accordance with the law. According to the Private Higher Education Institutions Act of 2003, the Ministry of Higher Education has the power to control and prosecute, up to and including revoking the university establishment license. In the past, there have been cases where private higher education institutions that violated the law in the same way had their licenses revoked.”
