Apia, Samoa – August 15, 2024 – This year’s championships suffered heavy losses due to delays in ticket bookings at Apia Park.
Aeau Chris Hazelman, chief executive of the Department of Education and Culture, confirmed in a press conference today that the Champs of Champs event will be cancelled.
“The reason is that the committee of school principals that formed the organizing committee failed to secure the venue on time,” O said.
He said the committee had just met last week and when the park was booked, Rakapi Samoa had reserved the park for the Manu Samoa project.
The championships are the finals of an annual inter-school athletics competition and are included in the school’s annual calendar, so the committee has plenty of time to prepare.
When a venue could not be determined, the committee tried to postpone the championship to September, however, O said “no”.
He said with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) coming up in October, the ministry was working hard to schedule all school activities within the stipulated time.
“All school activities like cultural day, sports and other school activities should be completed before the 30th.day August 2024, because September is “downtime for the ministry,” Aeau said.
Schools have also been told that internal assessments should be completed by July and school syllabus should be completed by September.
He said it was unfortunate that the highlight of the regional athletics meet was cancelled, however, the school’s priority was to complete the school’s internal assessments and syllabus.
“This year is different because of CHOGM, so we stopped school classes and other activities in September, but school exams in July are still going on.day October, followed by a three-week break,” Aeau said.
As for CHOGM, about 400 teachers and Ministry of Education staff will serve as auxiliary police and liaison officers for the conference.
