The school principal denied that teachers asked students to be absent during the last days of Ramadan, and stressed that the school will continue to teach the curriculum as per the quarterly plan and will complete the curriculum after students return from the Eid holiday.
In a statement to Al Arabiya, they said that the absence rate in the last days of Ramadan was high compared to the first day of Ramadan, especially among high school and middle school students, which is why some parents are keen to accompany their children to Tarawih prayers and prayers.
They added that the school sends messages to parents of absent students every day by phone and through the “Qatar Education” system to encourage children to go to school, confirming some laxity among students and parents during the Eid al-Fitr holiday approaching.
They pointed out that schools distributed brochures to students before Ramadan asking them to organize their day between classes, get enough sleep, pay attention to Suhoor meals and allocate time for study and homework, adding that they called on parents to ensure their children go to bed early and avoid staying up late.
Mr. Ibrahim Al-Muhannadi, the principal of Al-Kaaban Boys School, said that the claim that some teachers asked students to voluntarily be absent during the last ten days of Ramadan is unrealistic, stressing that teachers have their own study plans and follow them according to the circumstances. Al-Muhannadi added that the school has been keen on students’ attendance since the beginning of the term and even during Ramadan, and sent text messages to parents to inform them of the importance of reading with their children and explain to them the policy on implementing absences, stressing that the absence of some students at the end of Ramadan has become a bad habit repeated every year and the school is working hard to reduce this phenomenon.
He believes that the high number of absences will have an impact on the level of absences, noting that since the beginning of this month, we have asked parents to establish a daily system to balance the enjoyment of the rituals of Ramadan and a stable educational level, in addition to school teachers activating early education methods to increase students’ learning motivation, classroom activities and vitality, thereby encouraging attendance.
Mr. Nasser al-Maliki, the principal of Ahmed Mansour Boys Primary School, also denied the teachers’ claims of absences from school, saying that if there were any, they were only in a few cases. He explained that absences from school were also rare. In the last days of Ramadan, some parents are keen to accompany their children for Tarawih and Qiyam prayers, which leads to staying up late and not getting up early, which is common in many families. Al-Maliki called on parents to try to balance their children’s studies and religious ceremonies during Ramadan, pointing out that absences at the beginning of the month are rare. He stressed that the school is committed to adhering to the school calendar and stressed that following the study plan as directed by the Ministry of Education, if possible, there is some flexibility in the last days of Ramadan, especially if this is to remember the students’ Tarawih prayers, Qiyam and dawn prayers, as it has a great impact on the students’ souls and upbringing.
Do not exceed the allowed number of absences
Professor Ibrahim Abdullah Al-Muhammadi, principal of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Boys Preparatory School, also confirmed that the information circulating on social media sites about student teachers being asked to be absent is incorrect as it is a clear violation of the school’s instructions. The Ministry of Education and the school administration stressed that the school emphasizes daily attendance by having consecutive classes to ensure that the message is conveyed to parents about the importance of their children’s school attendance and that the number of days of permitted absences is not exceeded. Al-Mohammadi said that the school is currently preparing for the school session after Eid al-Fitr and a text message will be sent immediately after the Eid al-Fitr holidays to indicate the date and time of the start of school and the academic arrangements, noting that from the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the absence and attendance policy applies or parents provide an acceptable excuse to the school administration. He added that teachers have not yet completed the teaching of courses as per the semester plan.
